Does my app need to be approved by apple for me to be able to test the subscriptions?

I want to test the subscription paywall but when I open the app on Test Flight it simply does not work. I am wondering if it needs to be approved first to actually work.

Nope. You can test it without approval. I made iOS app like 2 years ago, so if nothing changed, you just need to create your product or subscription in administration, setup your testing email and test it
